Hi! Joanne here. Thanks for coming out to support our first ever pop-up GANBAE. This collaboration between me and Christina stemmed from our mutual love for Korean flavors and California cuisine. Ganbae represents food through the lens of first generation Korean Americans and how we like to cook and eat the food that we grew up with.
Growing up in Southern California, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by bountiful farmer’s markets and cultural diversity. Good food and good cooking has always followed me ever since I can remember. I come from strong home cooks, my mom, aunts and grandma slaying every meal at family gatherings. My family would find any excuse to gather and cook, and those meals together were when I felt the most nourished, in all senses. And that’s why I cook today, to continue that feeling of nourishment and joy.
Our name is simple: Christina puts the “Gan” (of her business @Ganchic) and I bring the “Bae” (cus das me). And we cannot get over the fact that the Mandarin word for “cheers” is “ganbei”, a perfect representation for our debut collaboration at Steep!
our collaboration
We are huge fans of Steep and incredibly honored to participate in their special pop-ups! It's truly inspiring to watch Lydia and Sam's constant efforts to bring people together and foster communities. The best part is that they are not trying to do it just because it's the "right thing to do," but it's an integral part of who they are. They are genuinely good people, and we love them for it!
